Pretty Boy7

Josh parked his car in front of the driveway. He held onto the steering well, wondering if this had been a good idea. His hands felt clammy against the leather and his stomach churned unpleasantly.

“Fuck,” he whispered, closing his eyes.

He was about to consider this the worst day in his life. First Jay had come to him begging for a night alone and then he’d had to go and cancel. He would never forget the other man’s grimace of pain and disgust. Josh had tried to explain that he was standing him up because he was trying to find a solution to your problem. Jay hadn’t want to hear it and had stormed off.

And now, here he was. Sitting in his car, five minutes to eight, wondering if he’d done the right thing in calling Anthony. They hadn’t spoken or seen each other for eight months. Josh worried his bottom lip. He had walked away from the relationship because Anthony was too intense. He wanted things Josh had felt at that moment that he couldn’t give him. Josh wasn’t sure what his reaction to seeing him would be. Was he truly over Anthony? Could he walk into that house with a straight face and ask the other man for help as if nothing had transpired between them? As if he hadn’t broken Anthony’s heart?

“Fuck,” he swore again.

They had been talking about living together when Josh had fled. He hadn’t given them a chance and now he was about to step into that house again. To go in and see and touch places where a lot had happened. He absently wondered if Anthony still kept the old leather chair. God, how he both hated and loved that thing. It was so out of place in the tiny living room, and yet, it fit so right. Josh sighed. He glanced at the clock. 8:01 pm. Anthony hated tardiness and there was no point in delaying the inevitable. If he was going to get help, he’d have to suck it up and go inside.

Stepping out of his car, he locked it and briskly made his way to the front door. The exterior of the house hadn’t changed, although it looked as if Anthony had finally gotten round to re-painting it. Josh swallowed and rang the bell. He shifted his weight while he waited. He knew Anthony was in there. The house was only one-story and light filtered through some of the windows. If he had to bet on it, Anthony had probably been aware of the exact moment he arrived and parked his vehicle.

The door began to open and he shoved his hands in his pockets to hide their trembling. His breath caught in his throat as his gaze finally landed on Anthony. Had he always been so tall? So imposing? Josh couldn’t help looking him over. He was dressed in dark blue jeans, a black t-shirt and a red-checked shirt. His beard was fuller than he remembered, his lips plumper. His black hair was longer, almost to his shoulders. His brown eyes shone mischievously and he gave Josh the lopsided smile that spelt nothing but trouble.
“Come in, Pretty boy, don’t just stand there. Did you miss me much?” Anthony said.

“Hello Josh.”

The fine hair on the back of Josh’s neck tingled. He swallowed. He wanted to say something but his tongue was glued to the roof of his mouth.

“To what do I owe the pleasure of your call?”

Anthony’s voice washed over him. It hadn’t lost that deep, seductive timbre that made his knees go weak.

“Anthony,” Josh said.

Though it was little more than a whisper, he knew the other man had heard him when his rich laughter sounded on the other side of the phone.

“It is you.”

“Yes, I-I need your help.”

Anthony’s laughter doubled.

“You just blew my mind,” he said. “You’re calling me, for help? What’s gotten into you?”

“Anthony, listen.”

“No, you listen to me, Josh. You left me and vanished and now you’re calling me because you need my help. You expect me to drop everything and go to you?”

“No.”

“In any case, what did you do? Mate with someone accidentally?”

Silence stretched between them. Anthony let out a string of courses.

“Damn it, Josh. You’ve done just that, haven’t you?”

“Yes,” Josh whispered, feeling ashamed.

“And what do you want me to do?”

“I need your help. You’re the only one that knows how to stop this.”

Josh bit on his lip. He could hear the metallic cling of Anthony’s ring against the table. He knew that sound. It meant Anthony was deep in thought, trying to figure out what he could gain from the situation. That much hadn’t changed.

“All right, Josh. I’ll help you,” came the voice from the other side.

“You will?”

“Yes.”

Josh clenched his hand into a fist. He wanted to ask what the price would be, but in his current predicament he couldn’t risk offending Anthony.

“Aren’t you going to ask me what the price will be?”

“No,” he said softly.

Anthony chuckled. “Fair enough. You’ll discover it eventually.”

The clink of the ring reverberated again. “Anyhow, pretty boy, I have to get back to work. We’ll do dinner tonight at eight. My place.”

“I can’t tonight,” Josh blurted.

“No? That’s a shame. Guess I won’t be able to help you then. Bye, Josh.”

“No, wait, Anthony.” Josh closed his eyes and sighed. Jay would kill him. “I’ll be there.”

“Perfect.”

Josh lowered his phone as the line went dead. He couldn’t believe he’d agreed to see Anthony again. Not only that, but at his place. Josh ran his fingers through his hair. He took in a deep breath. His stomach churned.

“Fuck,” he whispered under his breath.

Last time he’d been to Anthony’s things hadn’t ended well. Anthony had wanted more than he’d been willing to give and they’d gone their separate ways. Josh squeezed his eyes as realization dawned on him. Karma was a bitch. In a way, he’d done the same with Jay. He’d imprinted himself on him without his consent. Granted, it had been accidental, but still. Fuck. There had to be a way out of this mess. There just had to be a way to get his life back together, right?

“Make it go away,” Jay whispered against his lips. “Make it stop.” He pressed his mouth against Josh’s one more time. “I need this desperate ache to end.”

Josh avoided the other man’s gaze. “I can’t do anything, Jay.” He sighed. “The only way it will stop is if we’re together.”

“Then tonight, my place.” Jay placed a finger under his chin and gently lifted Josh’s head. “Eight o’clock.”

“But Jay—“

“I won’t take no for an answer, Josh. I’ll see you tonight.”

Jay’s blue eyes bore into his, demanding he accept the invitation.

“All right,” Josh said.

Seemingly satisfied, a brief smile crossed Jay’s face. He ran his fingers through his hair and straightened his tie. Giving Josh a small wave, he returned to the office area.

Josh hurried to the bathroom. He locked himself in a cubicle and sat down on the closed toilet seat. He cradled his head in his hands. He shouldn’t have accepted Jay’s invitation and he shouldn’t have led the other man to believe that one night of passion would be enough for them. Josh rubbed his eyes. Tonight the sex would be frenzied, wild, born out of desperation after days being apart. Neither would be satisfied. Content, perhaps, but they would crave more.

The mating pull was always like that. The desire for each other would never end. It would become manageable if they were together, but it was everlasting. Heck, he remembered his parents always kissing or smiling at each other. He had wished for something similar, but with Jay he’d made a mistake.

What was he going to do?

Jay didn’t really want him and Josh didn’t want to be with someone that didn’t fully care for him. He didn’t want to ask his parents for help and there was only one other person that could maybe assist him. With trembling fingers, Josh reached for the phone in his back pocket. He stared at the black screen for an instant. It had been months since they’d spoken and they hadn’t ended in good terms.
He dialed the number, mildly surprised that he still remembered it so well. He held his breath as he waited for him to pick up. He wouldn’t recognize the number as Josh had changed it soon after they’d separated. On the third ring, a deep male voice answered.

“Anthony.”

The hairs on the back of Josh’s neck stood. He chewed on the inside of his cheek, incapable of finding his ability to speak.

“Hello, anybody there?” Anthony asked. He sounded mildly irritated. “ Hello?”

“Anthony?” Josh whispered.

Josh closed his eyes. He could picture the man on the other side of the line. The shock he no doubt felt at that moment wouldn’t show on his masculine features. He’d hide it under a mask of sullen anger. His dark brows would knit together and his lips would purse. Agitated, he would drum the desk in front of him, the silver rings clanging against the solid wood.

“Hello, Josh.”
