Wednesday Briefs: Your Hump Day Dose of Flash Fiction: Light of Time 5

Happy Hump Day and welcome back to Wednesday's Brief. I'm continuing Light of Time's story and I have to admit I had a hard time deciding where to stop the story today because as it turns out I wrote more than the rules permit. *g*

I wanted to have Hodgin's point of view start on next week's chapter but I foolishly included today's prompt ""where angels fear to tread..." in his space. Regardless, I hope you enjoy!

*Haven't read the older chapters? Press the tab above that says Wednesday Brief and scroll down to the bottom.*

Light of time 5

The wheels in Bethany’s mind turned furiously as she stared at Hodgins’ cold eyes. His angular face was an unreadable mask and his posture was statue-like, tension seeping off him in waves.

“Sit, Beth,” he said quietly.

Balling her hands into fists, she obeyed, not so much because he ordered it but because she was still dizzy. Gently, she sat back down, perching on the edge of the golden hued settee, swallowing her sigh of relief. Folding her hands on her lap, she resumed the ladylike posture that had been drilled into her mind since she was a child, careless of the fact that her skirt was still wet.

Hodgins watched her with veiled eyes. She noticed for the first time that he’d let down his hair, the long tresses covering the shaved bits of his scalp and partially hiding the pink scar. She knew there was no point in running, not now at least. She didn’t know where she was, how to get out, and more importantly, she felt that had Hodgins wanted to harm her, he would have already done it.

“I have no intention of hurting you, Bethany but I couldn’t let you see where I was taking you. It is for your own safety.”

Hodgins studied her face, clearly waiting for her to say something. She stared back, taking in his features, from the five o’clock shadow on his angular face to the fullness of his lips and the straight bridge of his nose.

“You surprise me, Bethany and that is a rare thing. Most women would be crying or firing me with questions, yet you remain silent—“ he hesitated. “Observing me,” he added.

Bethany shrugged. “As you observe me, General.”

“Touché.” Coming to his feet, he took a step toward her and offered her his hand. “Come. You must get out of those wet clothes or you will fall ill.”

Disregarding his hand, Bethany stood. For an instant she saw mirth reflected in the cool eyes.

“You took off my boots,” she remarked, having failed to notice before the way her socks slid on the rug.

“Yes, regardless of what you think, I do not want you to get sick.”

She made no move to grasp his hand and with a curt nod, he accepted her decision. Grabbing a rusty oil lamp, he led her out of the room and up a flight of stairs into a bedroom, illuminated by a shaft of moonlight coming through a large double set of windows.

Bethany watched him as he moved from one place to the next, lighting lamps on matching bedside tables and starting the fireplace. He was like an animal, sleek, quiet, dangerous.  The hairs on the back of her neck stood on end and she shivered again, cursing the moment she’d accepted to meet him.

“I shall bring you something to wear,” Hodgins said, leaving her alone.

She took the chance to inspect the room. It was lavishly furnished in red and browns, but, though ornate, it seemed cold, empty even. She walked further inside, running the palm of her hand across the embroidered bedding, pausing to trace the design on one of the posts of the four poster- posts.

"Grandpa, what have I gotten myself into?" she murmured. Hodgins had promised answers but all he had done was snatch her away. Nana knew she was thinking about meeting the General but she had kept the date a secret. She'd been a fool.

“Here.” Bethany turned around sharply, almost colliding with Hodgins who had sneaked in behind her.

“Careful.” He grabbed her arm, steadying her. “Are you still dizzy?” he asked, searching her eyes.

Bethany shook her head and disentangled herself from his grip. Handing her a pink pastel robe, Hodgins made his way to the door. “I will be in the drawing room, downstairs, second door to the left. Please join me when you’re ready.”

Without another word, he snapped the door shut and left her.

***

Hodgins took a moment to relax in his old armchair in front of the blazing fire. He rested his elbow on an armrest, leaning into his hand, covering his tired eyes from the light. Ever since BJ, Bartholomew James, Beth’s grandfather, told him about finding the silver gem, he knew trouble was coming. The precious thing was a rarity and BJ had refused to tell him where he’d found it.

Hodgins rubbed his temple. He had found no proof, but his gut feeling told him that he’d been set up. His granddaughter also had her suspicions or she’d never have agreed to meet him. He was not popularly liked in New Lancashire, especially after the Hummingbird 121 incident.

A reckless man, he went where angels feared to tread. His foolhardy behavior had allowed him to rise fast in the military and he soon became General Lester Hodgins. Men respected him and women threw themselves at his feet. He’d had everything a man could ever want until the Zeppelin incident, a tragic accident that left him more or less unscathed physically, but not emotionally.

Rumors flew and he became the cursed one. He caused the accident on purpose, he sold them to the enemy, he was an undercover agent, he had made a pact with the devil, he was cursed. The more time passed the wilder the stories became. He’d been inspected, investigated and run through like a criminal. They found nothing. They kicked him out of the military shortly after and he became a recluse in his home. The life of wealth and enjoyment he had known fleeing out the window as his friends pulled away from a marked man.

Then one day, about five years ago, he met Bartholomew. The old man had been taking a hike in a nearby quarry of rocks, and they’d started talking. When he introduced himself, he expected the elder to balk and leave as others had done before him. Instead the old man, smiled, shook his hand and thanked him for his service to their country.

From that day on, BJ came to visit him at least once a week. Slowly, they started to work together and he found pleasure in helping the old man search for the myth of electrical light.

“General?”

Little Luna (6)

“Clare.” Mikelo watched as surprise registered in Clare’s gaze. Her eyes widened, her breath visibly catching as he stepped into the shaft of moonlight filtering through the window. He paused and as if by command her frantic movements to escape, stopped.

“What, how—“

Mikelo waited as she collected her scrambled thoughts, her gaze darting around the room, searching in the shadows for his hiding place.

“How long have you been watching me?” Her voice wavered.

His gaze bore into hers and he watched amused as a fresh coat of pink tainted her cheeks. Evidence of her dream still clung to her, from the flush on her neck, to the rapid rise and fall of her chest, to the disarrayed locks. His gaze lowered, a slow smile spreading on his face as she hurried to press her thighs together and readjust her skirt.

“For quite some time, little Luna,” he finally replied, looking at her. “This is my bed chamber.”

“Oh.” Her gaze dropped to the floor, her hair tumbling over her face and hiding her features from him. He knew she was still coming to grips with the erotic dream. It was normal. The thought of comforting her appealed to him, but he kept himself at bay. She needed to accept the reality of things on her own terms, at her own pace. He frowned. Even, if that time was in truth very limited.

Abruptly, she lifted her head. Straightening her spine and squaring her shoulders, she met his gaze head on. He fought the impulse to laugh. There was the little fighter that had stumbled upon his world years ago.

“Where are we?”

“Raidrako, the land of the red sun, capital of the Feardrako kingdom.”

“Your home?”

“Yes.”

“Why am I here?”

Mikelo sighed. Just when he had started hoping.

“I know the bond, the promise, but surely, there must be a way to break it? I don’t belong here.”

“It’s a little too soon to know that, don’t you think, Clare?”

Standing, Clare took a step toward him and opened her arms dramatically, her blue gaze intense in her defiant glare.

“Look at me, Mikelo. Look- at –me.”

He raised his eyebrows and she pressed her lips together in outrage.

“Do I look like I belong here? Dressed in a pale pink suit dress and stockings, standing at the side of a four poster bed with furs, with furs!” she cried out, stomping her foot in frustration.

A part of Mikelo knew he shouldn’t move. He should just take her anger until it passed, but he couldn’t. The blood bond was stronger in his realm and he’d waited so long for her, so long. He yearned to take her into his arms and feel the warmth of her heat around his cock. He wanted to kiss her until her lips became red and swollen as the moon during a storm.

He took a step and immediately she dropped her arms, her eyes wide. Another step and her bravado failed her completely.

“Yes, you’re right Little Luna.” Another step and she was hitting the bed with the back of her knees.  “Your dress and stockings don’t belong here; a woman in my realm does not wear clothes like those. But you.” She fell into a sitting position with a surprised yelp. Mikelo towered over her. “You do.”

Placing the palm of his hand on her shoulder, he pushed gently. She fell back against the feather mattress without a sound of protest. Leaning into her, he placed his arms next to her head, holding his weight and caging her.

“You belong here, Clare. You belong here with me, naked on this bed, writhing under me night after night as I take you to the highest heights of pleasure you have ever experienced.”

Mikelo leaned closer, his lips inches away from her parted mouth.

“Your dream was nothing compared to the reality of what could be, little Luna.” Her gasp of surprise drowned in his mouth as he finally tasted paradise.

Silver Flash Wednesday: Untitled chapter 2

Half the week is over already! Hurrah! I've been sick with a cold since Saturday and I thought I wouldn't be able to make it this week, but here I am!
I'm continuing with last week's untitled work. I still don't have a title for it, so I'd love to hear any suggestions if you have them.

This weeks prompts were:

from guest prompter Alison Todd: The moment I opened my mouth, I knew I would regret it.

And from Julie, one of these alternative prompts:

Use these three words in your story: sunshine, stereo, ambulance

or

cold hands, warm heart

or

"In for a penny, in for a pound"

Untitled chapter 2

Amanda passed the paintbrush across the faded pink walls. Her things had been taken out and sold in a yard sale or gone into storage at her parent’s house. There was nothing left for her here except memories. She grasped the brush painfully hard, enjoying the sensation of its wooden handle digging into her skin. It stopped her mind from wandering, or did it? Suddenly, she was remembering a day, years ago, when she had grasped something just as hard to keep her feet on the ground.

Amanda rushed across the patio. She had had enough with her foul neighbor. Why didn’t he go to his back patio to fix his darn motorcycle? No. He just had to do on his front lawn and annoy her to no end.

Three days ago, she had been again trying to read at her window seat when the brat had started revving his motor. She’d ask her mom if she could go talk to the neighbors, but she had refused, explaining that everyone could do as they pleased on their front lawn. She’d then gone to her father, but he’d said pretty much the same. Finally, she had spoken to her grandmother. She was the only one that had made a decent suggestion: “Why don’t you talk to the boy? I’m sure if you explain you can come to an agreement.”

Amanda huffed as she crossed the street. An agreement? Her ass! All the dimwit had done was stare at her as if she had descended from the planet of the apes. He had then proceeded to laugh in her face and ignore her. Oh, she had been so furious. She had rushed back home in tears.

It was then that her father suggested something useful. “Why don’t you use your Discman to drown out the noise?” She had. Until today. Today dimwit was being extraordinarily loud because not only was he making motor noises he had now added to the pack some hell sent metal music that killed her own classical preference.

As she stepped on the lawn, Amanda took in a deep breath. She fixed the hem of her purple tank top and straightened her shorts. Then she set her face into a determined mask, clenched her fists to her side and stomped her way to the boy’s garage.

“Ahem,” she loudly cleared her voice.

Dimwit didn’t even glance her way. This was war. She wasn’t prone to violence but if it came to that…in for a penny, in for a pound.

Amanda leaned forward over the bike. Her face almost level with dimwit’s as he bent over the bike’s wheel.

“AHEM!”

Dimwit looked up at her and smiled. For a moment, a funny feeling danced in her stomach and Amanda hurried to straighten herself. Dimwit turned his back on her and lowered the volume of the stereo.

“How can I help you?” he asked standing to his full height. Last time they had spoken he had been sitting in the sidewalk and hadn’t bothered to stand. Amanda was taken aback by how tall he was, she had to tilt her head back to look him in the face, but she refused to be intimidated.

“I asked nicely the other day, and I will ask again now. Can you please do this, “she spread her arms wide, indicating the music, the bike and everything around it, “somewhere else?”

Dimwit smiled, a slow sensual grin that caused his cheeks to dimple and made his blue eyes shine.

“No.”

“May I know why not?” she asked trying to maintain her composure.

“No.” He shrugged and returned to his previous position next to the bike’s wheel.

Amanda ground her teeth together. Decision coursing through her, she rushed around the bike and forced herself to stand between Dimwit and the wheel. Slowly, Dimwit raised his head. His gaze travelled across her body in a slow, sensual caress that caused her legs to tremble. Amanda held on to the motorcycle’s handle, the leather dug into her skin, helping her keep her mission in mind.

“I demand to know why you’re being so impossible and acting like an immature adolescent.”

Dimwit covered his eyes from the glare of the sunshine and said nothing. The blaring siren of an ambulance could be heard racing across a nearby street. Then there was silence. Amanda held her breath. Her grip on the handle tightened painfully but she refused to let go lest she forget why she was here. The boy’s glance was heating her from top to bottom, his eyes having turned a darker shade of blue and his full lips slightly parted, almost as if he too had trouble breathing.

“Maybe because I am an immature adolescent or maybe because I’m hurt you didn’t even ask my name.”

The sound of his voice, raspier than she could recall, brought Amanda back to earth. She fought back the confusing urge to either throttle the boy or kiss him.

“What is your name?” The words flew from her mouth before she could register them.

“Damian, my name is Damian. You’re Amanda.”

Amandra frowned. “How do you know?”

The boy took a step closer and she fought the urge to run.

“I’ll only tell you on one condition?”

Amanda glanced into his dancing blue eyes, a shiver ran down her spine, expectantly.

“What’s that?” her voice sounded strained to her own ears.

“If you let me kiss you.”
