When she opened her eyes, her gaze fell on the tall sycamore tree atop one of the rolling green hills which surrounded the Academy. She bit her lip and tried to evade the memory, but it was
inevitable, one look at that place and the memory of Seamus came crashing over her. Her hands became clammy and her heart began to race as she stuffed her things in her bag. 

She refused to dwell on the past, yet, as she straightened and threw her bag over her shoulder, she found herself looking at the spot again.
 
How long had it been? Ten or twelve years at least, probably more.

Nowadays, she had finally managed to stop thinking about him during the day. Sometimes, she was even capable of doing it at night. However, there wasn’t a single week in which she could say thoughts of Seamus hadn’t crossed her mind.
 
It was slow, painful torture, but she refused to give in.

“Damn it, Aslan, what’s taking so long?” he whispered. 

Sweat gathered on his brow and adrenaline pumped through every cell in his body. His hands itched to either hold a sword and continue fighting, or go to her. Almost automatically, he searched for the tattoos on his ribs.

Kaila.

Her image flashed in his mind. His heart lurched in a way that was both painful and familiar. It was the memory of his mate not wanting him. The knowledge that no matter how hard he tried, Kaila didn’t want to see him and didn’t forgive his past transgressions. But it was also the deep, bone-aching, bottomless love he felt for her.

Seamus leaned forward until his elbows rested on his knees and looked at his shoes. A thin layer of dust covered them. His gaze traveled over his equally dirty pants. The stench of battle,
a mixture of sweat, death, and rot, entered his system. Seamus groaned. He opened the palm of his hands and started. Dry blood coated them.

Damn his boss. He’d hardly stepped through the portal which connected Earth to Virtue Island when a messenger had caught up with him. Aslan needed to see him.

It's been an insane week with lots of work from the EDJ. Not a bad thing, but it has left me little time to write and do anything remotely related. However, I've taken it easy this weekend and have finally finished editing Kaila and Seamus' story. Now, I just need to send it to some beta readers for approval and then if all goes well prepare a new submission.

Going on to the snippet. Last week, Kaila had finally entered Sloth's lair. She was in the dark and a voice spoke behind her. As you all guessed, it was Seamus. In today's snippet I've skipped a few lines and I've edited a lot to comply to the ten sentences rule.

Relief swept through her as his fingers curled around her upper arm in a firm grip. 

“I couldn’t quite leave you to battle Sloth alone, could I?” he said. "Especially if the first thing you did was kick open the door and leave your bag behind,” he continued. "Tsc, tsc, Kaila, I thought they'd trained you better."

“They did, but clearly they didn’t do the same with you.” She clutched his wrist. “You took my things and have been hiding in the shadows, watching me panic all this time and that’s low, Seamus. Give me back my stuff and go do whatever it is you have to do.”

Seamus chuckled.

“You never let me help, anyway. Hold still, I’ll hand it to you.”

It's been a crazy week and weekend! Work-wise it was chaos with the end of the September courses so loads of paperwork but there was also time for leisure. Yay! I spent two days and a half visiting a friend in Paris. |Lovely trip and much needed weekend getaway.

Heads up, I might not be able to visit your amazing snippets as I have a work meeting this afternoon. *cringe* But will stop by throughout the week.




Last week I shared a snippet in which Kaila finally entered Sloth's lair. The snippet ended with: The doors were gone, replaced by darkness.

She took a step in no particular direction. Her knives felt heavy in their sheaths against her thigh. The comforting weight infused her with courage and she took another step, her mind clearing. She needed light, a flashlight. She smiled to herself as she reached for the strap of her backpack. Her fingers brushed against her bare shoulders and her stomach dropped to her feet. Desperate, she palmed her back. In her haste to leave Seamus, she’d forgotten it.  She couldn’t continue without her provisions.

 “I think you forgot something.”
