His head lowered and instead of the kiss she’d been expecting, he drew her closer until her head lay cradled on his chest and her body molded to his. He rested his cheek against her hair and took a deep breath. Victoria laid the flat of her palm over his chest, softly drawing circles on the soft cloth of his shirt, feeling the hard muscle beneath. His heart pounded in her ear, steady, fast, assuring her he was as excited and nervous as she was and making her forget the world around her. There were no monsters, no eyes, no looming sense of dread. It was just that intimate gesture between her and Adrian, his heart beating next to her ear like a soothing balm.
