TnT Confidential: Tali Spencer and Thick as Thieves

Welcome to TnT Confidential! Today I'm incredibly honored to have talented author Tali Spencer coming in for a visit with her fantastic novel, Thick as Thieves.

Playing With Size

One of the things I’ve always loved to play with in stories is a size differential between the main characters, especially when they’re a couple. With M/F books this is easy because it’s built into reader expectations: An afternoon spent in Romance forums discussing the ideal hero would convince anyone that no man under 6 ft. should even attempt to pursue a woman.

Size differentials are alive and well in M/M also. Just consider how often a big strong alpha male is paired with a slim, lithe smaller man. Better yet, size difference is a staple of heroic fantasy. One of the reasons hobbits are fun, or Hagrid in the Harry Potter books, is because the size difference between these and other characters creates opportunities.

For Thick as Thieves, my recently released M/M sword and sorcery romp, I deliberately set out to play with size. First off, the characters were born out of my love of giant barbarians who team up with smaller men, usually thieves. Just take a look at this picture of a pair of classic fantasy heroes: Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser. Talk about a size difference! I knew I could have fun with that.

When I created Vorgell, I made him big. Really big. He’s tall and muscled and picking a fight with him is a bad idea. As a contrast, I created Madd to be small, lithe and pretty—but he’s definitely no pushover. He’s just unlucky. The fact that both men attract bad luck is what puts them in a cell together.

Throughout the book I have fun with their size disparity. The initiating event of the story is that Vorgell falls under the influence of hallucinogenic berries and fucks himself with a unicorn horn. It’s absurd to begin with—and even more absurd because he’s so big and strong. That the episode has made him horny as hell because unicorn horn is an aphrodisiac brings out all kinds of stereotypes for play and exploration. Is the big man necessarily always on top? What assumptions do we—and the characters in the book—make about a man based on his size? And do giant cocks really belong in tiny orifices? Maybe that small man doesn’t want to find out.

Blurb:

After Vorgell the barbarian fucks himself with a unicorn horn, he ends up in a cell with Maddog, a pretty young thief. It’s lust at first sight for Vorgell—but honestly, he can’t help it. Unicorn horn is a potent aphrodisiac, and now he can’t stop thinking about sex. Luckily, Madd is one male witch who knows how to put Vorgell’s new magical body to good use when he tricks Vorgell into a kiss that helps them escape.

Vorgell may desire sex in general—and Madd in particular—but Madd has no intention of being screwed by a man twice his size. He has problems of his own, including an enchanted collar that causes him to desire his most hated enemy. He wants that collar off as soon as possible, but that requires stealing a basilisk egg from the castle they just escaped.

Drawn together by lust and magic, the two men join forces and soon find themselves up to their necks in witches, wizards, and trouble. Vorgell and Madd might just be perfect for each other, but first they have to survive long enough to find out.

Excerpt:

“Put me down, you son of a she-ox!”

“Quiet,” grunted the brute. What was his name? Virgil? Vogull? “The Baron’s men are probably chasing us.”

“I think we’ve got enough forest between us and them for you to set me on my feet. I have two legs… I can walk!”

“You couldn’t even stand before.” That said, Vorgell—yes, that was it—stopped running and, putting his immense hands on his captive’s waist instead of his thighs, lifted him down. A long way down.
Madd’s legs, numbed by the tight hold on them, immediately buckled, and he lurched against his rescuer. Vorgell reached a brawny arm out to pull him tight against his towering body packed with muscle so dense Madd felt as though he’d just slammed against granite.

“What’s your name?” Vorgell helped him stagger forward until the blood returned to his limbs. “You might as well tell me. I already know you’re a blighted sorcerer.”

“Maddog. Madd will do.” His name was little enough to share, and the man could have left him to the soldiers—or the baron. Even the ringing in his ears and the pounding pain in his head was not too great a payment for getting away from that man.

“Here, sit down.” They’d come to a clearing thick with fallen moss-covered tree trunks. Vorgell helped ease him down onto one of the logs. “You took a nasty blow.”

“Why help me?”

Vorgell’s lips, the lower bloodied and swollen, slowly parted over large, white teeth. There was no mistaking the bulge in his trousers, or the sloppy, tattered fabric stretched over that twitching snake.

Madd groaned. “Fuck me, you’ve got to be kidding.” His head hurt, magic-laced blood tainted his mouth, and this man was suggesting he might want to ride a unicorn-enhanced stiff prick?

“It’s not my fault you’re pretty, and small—”

“I’m not small,” Madd pointed out, that being something of a sore point. “I only look small because you’re huge!”

“Which puts me at an advantage. Among my people, you’d be one of the men who keep men like me happy.”

Madd knew well enough what that meant. He’d been keeping the baron happy for months. Unfortunately, his attempt at reversing the screwing, so to speak, had not quite worked out as planned. Sure, he’d ended up in a cell and plotted a clever escape, but all that had gotten him was the company of a sex-crazed barbarian and the man’s impossibly large and erect cock, which Vorgell had freed of its tattered coverings and was displaying to him in all its glory. His tongue went silent as he stared. That cock might be a monster, but it was also magnificent… rosy, long, and thick, with a luscious, big head poking free of the foreskin and glistening like the jewel on a scepter. The only way that knob could be any shinier would be if he’d been licking it.
He was utterly mesmerized; it came as a shock to hear Vorgell still speaking to him earnestly.

“You don’t know what it was like, carrying you, feeling you all warm and nice, and the whole time all I could think about was your sweet bobbing ass. I don’t even like magic users, not usually. But you completely enthrall me. I can’t fight it anymore. Take your clothes off, or I’ll—”

“Keep your hands off my clothes!” He yanked his straw-flecked cloak tight to his body. “And you’re not getting that thing anywhere near my ass!”

“I don’t think you can stop me.” Vorgell lunged, and Madd dove headfirst off the fallen log and into a hollow filled with last season’s crumbling leaves. He barely registered the barbarian’s babble. He was frantically searching the surrounding trees, trying to find a moon oak. “You’re too little to overpower me, and I overheard the baron’s mages saying magic wouldn’t work on me, because of the unicorn horn in my blood.”

Screw me, he’s right. The giant stood over him, lust burning in his eyes. His cock dripped so heavily it looked as if he were watering the forest floor. Madd narrowed his gaze and muttered a spell. Maybe he couldn’t work magic on the unicorn-crazed oaf, but he could damn well enchant a tree.

With a resounding crack, a jug-sized burl broke from the trunk of a nearby moon oak and flew through the air. It cracked just as loudly when it slammed into Vorgell’s head. The big man blinked, staggered three steps—an amazing feat, considering—then dropped in a heap.

Madd rose, brushing leaves and litter from his cloak, and pondered his fallen nemesis. Vorgell was still breathing and, given the magic in his blood, would recover quickly. Until then… yes, Vorgell’s cock was still at full mast. Madd smiled. He could definitely do something with that, but he would have to be careful. Magic, even in the form of a lusty and beautiful cock, could be dangerous.

Author Bio
Tali Spencer fell in love with writing at an early age and never stopped. Thanks to a restless father, she grew up as a bit of a nomad and still loves to travel whenever she can. Her longest stint in one place was Milwaukee where she went to college and enjoyed a series of interesting careers including respiratory therapist, airport executive, and raising three surprisingly well-adjusted sons. She later married her true love and put down new roots in Philadelphia, where she lives in an ongoing Italian American family sitcom. At least she’s learned how make good pasta. When not writing, Tali reads everything from sweet goofy romances to Lebanese cookbooks, manages her fantasy football team—go Gekkos!—and takes long walks with her loving, if slightly neurotic, poodle.

Writing The Sensual Story

Thanks, Elyzabeth, for letting me visit. On this visit I’m also offering a copy of my new M/M release, Dangerous Beauty, to one of the commenters on this post.

People ask me sometimes how I write lush and evocative prose. After I finish blushing and drawing circles on the floor with my foot, I explain that I use all the senses. One of my favorite editing tricks is to go through the story and find places where a sense doesn’t deliver a needed punch. My favorite images, however, are almost always visual.

In my newest release, Dangerous Beauty, the second of my Uttor series set in a world not terribly unlike our own in historical times, the very first sentences invoke an image upon which the main character, Endre, is understandably fixated. I give the reader exactly what Endre is seeing and—because he’s the POV character—his response reveals a great deal about him.

Endre Kordeun touched his tongue to his lips as he watched the brown-skinned man’s cock rear above muscular thighs like a cobra ready to spit. He had never seen a cock so beautiful. Long fingers as regal as the man who owned them stroked the monster, displaying it with the casual confidence of one who knew he would be admired.

Readers soon learn Endre doesn’t think of himself as gay. In fact, his religion and family would condemn him if he were. But the reader is already onto the truth about Endre’s sexual attraction to other men. It’s there in the details, how much he notices about another man’s cock, and also about the other man himself. As it happens, the man being described is the other hero of the book, Arshad. Both men are about to embark on a journey of danger and discovery.

Later, after a bout of lovemaking, Endre reawakens to all his senses and pulls these impressions together:

The air smelled of sex and men and, oddly, of books. Endre moved a stiff arm, surprised to find himself on a hard surface, a rug on the floor, clasped against another body by a loose, muscular arm. He was naked, and as he twisted his hips, a telltale soreness in his thighs and ass brought back a rush of memories he found astounding. The domed ceiling overhead displayed celestial designs and equations that made his mind soar. He and Arshad lay at the exact center of the room, beneath a golden sun conceived by an artist and ringed by glimmering heavenly realms.
How egotistical, he thought. Though it was true he felt himself the center of the universe.

The scene utilizes the senses and weaves them into things the reader already knows: that Arshad is a celestial mathematician, Endre is an excellent observer of the universe and everything around him, and the two men believe in something few in their world believe, that their world circles the sun.

I see the world as beautiful and elegant, even when it’s horrifying or dangerous, and I hope my readers enjoy the journeys on which I take them. Dangerous Beauty is one of those journeys. The novel continues the story begun in Captive Heart, a M/F romance involving Endre’s sister Julissa and the Uttoran emperor Gaspar, both of whom have cameos in this book.

 Blurb:
Once the Kordeun family ruled Sebboy…now they are imperial captives of the Uttoran Emperor. Devout and studious, Endre Kordeun loves his family and will do anything to free them, even if that means pretending he’s gay so he can pass messages to his father’s shady allies. With his golden good looks and a beautiful male courtesan posing as his lover, Endre finds Uttor’s decadent society more than willing to believe his ruse.

But when a passionate kiss from a dark, gorgeous man unlocks feelings Endre had been hiding even from himself, lies start to unravel. Arshad, prince of Tabar, is Endre’s match in every way…including a shared love for science and celestial mechanics. Going forward with his charade will be dangerous, and not only because he might be discovered. In that event, even his own father would kill him. How much is Endre willing to risk for love?

Excerpt:

Footsteps sounded on the gravel path, stopped, waited. Someone was there, listening for sure and maybe watching. His guard should have interrupted; Yanni surely would have. This had to be someone else. Frozen by indecision, Endre allowed Arshad’s lips to continue their artful assault. Sweep by sweep, those firm lips commanded his and he resisted less than he should have, kissing back, teeth on teeth, tongues warring as he fought for control. One of them would soon have to breathe and he broke first, throwing his head back, gasping for air. With a triumphant growl, Arshad began pressing hot kisses along the column of his exposed throat.

“Oh, Prophets!” Endre gasped. Overhead, moonlight spilled through the tangle of vines. He turned his head to the right and saw Arshad’s knotted hand manacling his wrist. Dense hair crushed against his cheek, the man’s mouth hot on his collarbone. His cock, already hard enough to be uncomfortable, stiffened painfully against his trousers and he groaned with need and discomfort from the now tight cock cuff.

Arshad ceased his kisses and slammed his body forcefully against him. “Everything you want,” he said, “I can give it to you. Every…fucking…thing.” Those powerful thighs ground his pelvis against Endre’s, rolling cock against stiff cock.

“Damn it, stop,” Endre grated, barely a whisper. Was their watcher still there? He didn’t even know. Worse, he no longer cared. His cock was on a rampage, straining against the cuff secured around his shaft and balls. He jammed his hips forward, pushing back, increasing the contact and the pleasure.

“Not on your life. You’ve been asking for this for weeks. This is what you’re here for, what you need. Not someone small and soft. You want it large and hard.” Arshad bent his head near again, lips brushing his ear, and murmured, “Say it, princeling. Let them hear you say you want it.”
That big hard cock was grinding against his now, creating such sweet friction he knew he would never last. Endre groaned against his clenched teeth. His head sagged forward, bumping Arshad’s shoulder, golden hair spilling across midnight velvet. He was on the fucking edge.

“Say it.” That dark voice vibrated softly beside his ear.

No, he wouldn’t do it. He wasn’t going to say it, no matter what his damn cock was feeling. He shook his head.

“Stubborn,” Arshad grunted. Taking the edge of Endre’s ear between his teeth, he gently bit.

Happy Thursday readers! Today author Tali Spencer is back but this time to tell us a little about her male/female romance and All Romance Ebook best seller,  Captive Heart.

Homely Sexy Heroes

Blurb:

Gaspar bent a frown upon her. “I didn’t reject your sister because of her looks. She’s beautiful. All of you are so beautiful, it’s an offense to the gods that you have so much beauty and the rest of us have so little. I rejected her because I heard what she said—what all of you said—about my looks.”

“Oh.” Julissa could have winced, recalling.

“Your sister said I have a most unattractive visage and she would only enjoy herself in bed by imagining my cock as large as my nose.”

She flushed, because Ilona had said those very words. “Well, I never said anything like that!”

“Yes, you did.” He studied her unhappily. “My emissaries tell me, you know, what people say in reaction to my appearance. You said, ‘It is rather large.’ And you weren’t referring to my cock.”

“Well, it’s true!” Julissa refused to be cowed for her comment. “You have a large nose, Gaspar. It’s strong and bold and handsome. Why wouldn’t anyone admire it? From the moment I saw you, I thought it fine. But Gaspar, that portrait is hideous! Have you looked at it? It makes you look like a horse. I will not be held accountable for anything I said upon seeing that horrible likeness.”

Thanks, Elyzabeth, for having me stop by today. Again. I was just here the other day to talk about my other new release, Sorcerer’s Knot. This time, I’m giving away a copy of my M/F romance, Captive Heart, and talking about the joys of having a less than perfectly handsome hero.

Notice I didn’t say the hero is ugly. He’s just… not perfect. Gaspar, the hero of Captive Heart, has a big nose. It’s not grotesque, but it is certainly big and there’s no getting around it. He’s still an attractive man. He’s active and fit. He has beautiful eyes and good teeth and wonderfully kissable lips. And he’s not one of those standoffish, snarly, have-to-break through his armor heroes. Heroes only get away with that when they’re super handsome, or have a scar but would be handsome without it.

Gaspar’s nose, in fact, appears in the story before he does. The heroine, Julissa, and her sister talk about it because they’ve recently seen Gaspar’s courtship portrait. Like true spoiled princesses, the girls dismiss him based on his appearance.

When Julissa meets Gaspar, she realizes his nose isn’t that big. And as a captive in his tent, she’s in a position to assess his other, more attractive qualities. A woman is truly ready for romance when she sees past a man’s good looks—or lack of them—and can focus on his character… or his really nice backside. It isn’t long before Julissa begins to appreciate what a sexy and intelligent man the emperor who captured her country really is.

The other interesting thing about having a hero who isn’t handsome is he can be adorably vulnerable. Gaspar knows he’s not handsome… but he wishes he were. As shown in the blurb above, he resents how often people judge him by his looks. Julissa rises even higher in his estimation by telling—and showing—him that she thinks his nose is just fine the way it is. That he’s fine. We all want the one we love and desire to tell us they think we’re sexy.

T n'T's Confidential: Tali Spencer! (Giveaway!)

Hey everyone and welcome! This week we've got a double date with lovely author Tali Spencer. *applause* Tali has just released two novels:   Sorcerer's Knot and Captive Heart (which is already an All Romance Ebook best seller) and she's going to tell us all about both of them today and on Thursday.
Tuesday is all about her male-male novel Sorcerer's Knot. Read on and leave a comment at the bottom because Tali is giving away a copy to one lucky commentator!!!

The Language of Dragons

Thanks for letting me stop by, Elyzabeth, to talk about my new M/M fantasy novella, Sorcerer’s Knot. I’ll also be giving away a copy of the book to one of the people who leave a comment below.

I’ve been asked what the title, Sorcerer’s Knot, means, and the best answer is that it becomes clear upon reading the book. But there’s no reason I can’t mention that it refers to a spell bestowed by a dragon.

Though no dragon actually appears in Sorcerer’s Knot, dragons nonetheless exist in that world. The genesis myth for the world where Sorcerer’s Knot takes place talks about a sundering of the Deep, when the dragons rebelled against the Old Ones and created land. The land rose above the waves and the dragon’s ruled it. They created every variety of land and sky life and consider humankind to be one of their more elegant creations. Being very ancient and generally disinterested in our society, they avoid humans unless one of them is summoned by a wizard powerful enough to speak their tongue. Dragon language is close to that of the elements from which dragons were originally spawned.

Once summoned, a dragon can be persuaded to bestow upon the summoner a single word, created at that moment. The word is tucked under the wizard’s skin, available to be used at any time. The spell it enables is the most powerful of all. Here’s a short blurb that describes it well:

Muir held his gaze. As moonlight flickered through the shutters, he asked, “Why seek magic you can never turn to your advantage? You will never leave here. I placed a sorcerer’s knot upon this island, a spell that can never be broken. Anything that comes to this island, whether it be living or dead, animal, plant, or mineral, can never leave.”

Cian’s breath caught. If what Muir said was true, he was trapped here forever. A sorcerer’s knot, though difficult to work, could not be unmade unless the world was unmade. It held at its heart a single word granted by dragons to a mage who had successfully summoned one of their kind. A single word that, once used, ceased to exist and could not be recreated, removing all hope of breaking the spell.

That’s not the only gift given by a dragon in the story. Cian didn’t just summon his dragon, he seduced the great beast and enjoyed a little extra… attention. In return, the dragon rewarded him—or rather, his ass. Dragons, as Muir says at one point, are unusually intuitive.

So there you have it! A sorcerer’s knot is a spell to be reckoned with.
