Author Sptlight on Amy Braun and Smoke Sky (Dark Sky Series) #steampunk #adventure #horror

SMOKE SKY is the second prequel novella preceding the adventurous steampunk horror tale CRIMSON SKY and centering around a young thief named Gemma––not yet a member of the Dauntless Wanderer crew––as she was forced to choose between freedom from a twisted family, and forsaking the only people who have ever shown her kindness…

To survive in a horrific world overseen by bloodthirsty monsters, young thief Gemma will do whatever she must to see another day. Even though that means working for a damaged man convinced to make her a permanent member of this thuggish family.

So when her employer tells her that he’ll release her from his clutches, Gemma is obviously skeptical. Especially since the job is easy enough– recruit the two marauders that the gang has been spying on to take her place.

But as Gemma lies to Nash and Sawyer, she commits the greatest mistake a spy can make–– she begins to see them as friends, and perhaps more. Soon, she will have to choose: Sacrifice two strangers to ensure freedom from a brutal future, or risk her life to save them…

Set two years before the events of CRIMSON SKY, this prequel novella tells the story of how Gemma met Nash and Sawyer, and what prompted her to chose their safety over her own. While best enjoyed before reading CRIMSON SKY, this bonus story can be read at any time or enjoyed as a standalone.

SMOKE SKY is set two years before the first novel in the DARK SKY series, CRIMSON SKY, and takes place shortly after Captain Sawyer Kendric and his first mate Nash meet AMBER SKY. The story is told from the perspective of Gemma, the future master gunner and rigger of the Dauntless Wanderer. Before she became a marauder, Gemma was a thief working for a sadistic and morally damaged man named Fletcher, who formed a “family” with three young men named Boyd, Tyler, and Morris. She longs to escape their horrible plans for her future, but to do so, she must take one last job: Trade her life for the lives of two young marauders named Sawyer and Nash to take her place in their family. But when Gemma integrates with them, she realizes they are good men and develops strong feelings for them, especially charming, kind-hearted Nash. Soon she is torn between sacrificing her freedom, and her morals and sanity.

Of all the novellas I’ve written to date, Smoke Sky is one of my favorites. Gemma and Nash have a relationship that I love––they are two characters who could hardly be more opposite, but who fit together so beautifully––and I couldn’t let their story go untold. This is likely the most romantic story in the Dark Sky series and features one of my favorite romance moments, so I hope a lot of readers enjoy it.

Gemma’s past is hinted at in Crimson Sky when Gemma has a conversation with the main series heroine, Claire Abernathy, but at the time, it was something I just threw in there for context. I didn’t really plan anything beyond moving Crimson Sky forward. But when I decided I wanted to do some novellas, I thought it would only make sense to go back to that moment when she was explaining pieces of her past to Claire, and extrapolate from there.

I started Smoke Sky shortly after completing its predecessor, Amber Sky. Because it’s so short, less than 40,000 words, I decided to write it as an ebook only, though it will be included in the Dark Sky Box Set releasing in April 2017. The whole story was a lot of fun to write, but I have to say that my favorite part was building the relationship between Gemma and Nash. Their personalities are so contrasting––she’s brash and fiery, he’s gentler and relaxed––that it was fun just to have them flirt and grow close to each other, while Sawyer grudgingly accepts that he enjoys the challenge of her company, as she’s not afraid to challenge him.

After hard weeks of writing, editing, and gushing over the cover created by Deranged Doctor Design, I worked on setting up my own promotions with Google Forms and contacted book reviewers, bloggers, and bookstagrammers who have helped me with previous releases. They are all fantastic, friendly, wonderful people, and if they’re taking the time to read this, know that I appreciate all your hard work more than I can say.

Though I’m very happy to have the release of Smoke Sky––one of my favorite written novellas to date––out in the world, I’m eager to get back to working on the final novel in the Dark Sky series, Obsidian Sky. I love hearing feedback from everyone I work with (I really couldn’t have done it without you) and everyone I share my books with, and would love to hear thoughts on this novella and upcoming work.

Q & A: Amy Braun and Smoke Sky– MINOR SPOILERS BELOW.

Q: What inspired you to write Smoke Sky and two prequel novellas?

A: Gemma is one of those characters who you know has a story to tell as soon as you meet her in Crimson Sky. What pushed her to become a thief? Why is she so fiercely attached to Nash? Is it just her personality that causes her to clash with Sawyer more often than not? I love Gemma––she’s exactly the kind of heroine I like reading about and after mentioning a snippet of her story in Crimson Sky, I knew I had to find out more about her. As with Nash, I wanted to tell her story and learn more about the world of Westraven and Aon. I just had no idea that there would be so much to tell!

Q: Why did you choose to tell the story from Gemma’s perspective?

A: For a thief, Gemma is a noticeable character. She’s not quiet and not afraid to speak her mind to anyone challenging her––including her captain. Since I love writing characters who snark and question authority as much as they breathe, it was really a no-brainer to tell the story in her own sarcastic, quick-witted words. Plus, delving into the true depth of the emotions she feels for Nash, feelings she never considered she might have, add another layer to her character and give her an almost vulnerable appeal, something Gemma would never let show if she could avoid it.

Q: Which was more challenging to write: Amber Sky or Smoke Sky?

A: Both of them had their challenges, but if I had to choose, I would say Smoke Sky was harder. There were more settings to construct, a more complex challenge for the characters to overcome, and more world building to do. I also had to answer certain questions about the Dauntless Wanderer and how it was able to be transported to its final location, which was no easy feat. But I also think that because of those challenges the story is stronger. Don’t get me wrong––I love and am very proud of Amber Sky, but there’s more going on in Smoke Sky and that makes it engaging and exciting.

Q: Gemma’s relationship with Nash and Sawyer are vastly different. Which did you enjoy writing more?

A: While I had a great time pitting Gemma against Sawyer and loved writing their barbs and teasing, I liked writing the moments between Gemma and Nash more. I’m a sucker for sweet romances, and Nash is nothing if not a teddy bear. Considering I wanted to tie in events from Amber Sky with Smoke Sky, I thought their scenes flowed wonderfully. Nash is smitten early on but Gemma is a little more hesitant, and watching her test those barriers between them was amazing. There is one particular scene in the middle of the novella that I’m very proud of and sums up their relationship tenderly and beautifully, so I look forward to hearing feedback from readers and reviewers on it.

Q: What can you tell us about the final novel in the Dark Sky series?

A: Obsidian Sky will be the last of the last in the Dark Sky books. I’m currently editing it, and it will be slated for release on February 7, 2017, with a cover reveal happening January 2. The story is told from both Sawyer and Claire’s perspectives, will be full of action, and will vastly expand the world by going way beyond the borders of Westraven. I have some surprises and a lot of excitement planned for this final book, and couldn’t be more excited to share it. I’ll be doing a lot of promotions around social media and my website, but newsletter subscribers will get first peeks at the cover and notifications on the big giveaway I’ll be doing. I can’t wait to share it with you all!

Excerpt:
"You have family here? Clover East is such a small town. I don't visit often but I think I know who all the families are around here."

Nate was tempted to ask if Lucian knew Janette Madison, Nate's aunt, but he was afraid it would be too soon, too abrupt.

"Nah, I don't have family here," he said instead. "I had just thought one of my aunts stopped by this town, but I'm not so sure myself." There, he had said it.

"You haven't had any news from your aunt?"

"No."

"You mean she's missing or something?" Lucian frowned.

"Honestly, I don't know if she's missing or just doesn't want to be found."

"Did your family ask you to find her?"

Nate played with his bottle. He wouldn't look at Lucian. "No one asked me to locate her because there's no one else out there. She's the only family I have left. That's why I wanted to find her."

Neither spoke after that. When Nate lifted his head, he found Lucian staring blankly at a spot on the table. He wanted to ask about him instead but Nate couldn't bring himself to open his mouth. His mind was whirling with the thoughts that until now, years after he first came to this city, he still couldn't find Aunt Janette.

Nate,

I'm sorry about your loss and I'm very sorry I didn't come to the funeral. I was halfway around the continent and I was quite short of money. But don't worry about me. I met someone and he asked me to go live with him. I don't know if you've heard of Clover East, a small town in Illinois? I hadn't, before this. But I have a good feeling about this place, Nate. If you ever want to come to stay with me, you'll be more than welcome.

"No, she's definitely missing," he said suddenly.

"Excuse me?" Lucian looked startled. Nate didn't blame him.

"She sent me a letter, literally inviting me to be with her."

"What do you mean -- be with you?"

"She met a man who asked her to come to Clover East. She understood I had just lost everyone so she wanted me to stay with her. She sounded so happy at that time. There were no signs that she wanted to hide. Something bad must have happened to her."

"Did she mention any names?"

Nate shook his head, and practically jumped when Lucian clasped a hand over his. When did he get so close?

"You're not alone anymore. We'll search for your aunt and we're going to find her. Together."

Nate gawked, first at the hand that was warm against his skin and then up to Lucian’s soft green eyes. The man was nothing like the cold, arrogant one Nate had met earlier that morning. He was almost afraid at the sudden change.

"Uh, thank you, I guess?"

"Does my grandma know about this?"

"No, I never told her."

"Why didn't you?"

Nate had never thought about why it had not crossed his mind to talk to Helen about it. She had never asked him why he came to the town, thus, he didn't feel the need to mention it.

"I don't know," he said simply to Lucian.

Lucian pursed his lips. "I just thought it might help, you know. She's lived here all her life. She must notice when there's a newcomer in town, especially when the person suddenly disappears."

"I found it strange," Nate said slowly, "that no one seemed to hear or see anything about her. It's like she never set foot in this place."

"Are you sure she was really here?"

Nate said nothing and took out his cell-phone. He opened the picture albums and scrolled down until he found what he was looking for. He showed the picture to Lucian, who scrutinized it like a doctor checking on a patient on an operation table. Nate could almost see through Lucian's eyes his aunt smiling at the camera, her long black locks blown by the wind. She posed in Clover East's city square in front of a group of tables belonging to a café there.

"She was alone."

"Yeah." Nate knew exactly what Lucian was thinking. If she'd been with someone, they might have been able to recognize them.

"I wonder who took the picture."

"She could've simply asked a passerby to do it."

"You're right." Lucian gave him back the cell phone. "She only sent you that?"

"Yes, unfortunately."

"So she was really here but we have no idea for how long and whom she met."

"I was worried about her." Nate sighed, and when he looked up, Lucian's eyes bored into his.

"We'll tell my grandma when she's home and start an extensive search."

Nate didn't know what to say. He felt as if he was drowning in Lucian's gaze.

"O-okay," he said finally, after he realized Lucian had cleared his throat several times, awaiting his response.

"Good." Lucian heaved a deep breath and stretched out, pulling his arms high above his head, and Nate was unable to keep his eyes off the scrumptious sight. "So, will you stay for dinner?"

Author Bio:
Iyana writes M/M short stories and novellas. Her works have been published by Evernight Publishing, JMS Books, Books to Go Now, Torquere Press, Bitten Press, Leap of Faith Publishing, Breathless Press, and Alfie Dog Fiction.
Iyana lives in Jakarta, a city famous for its traffic jams, a lot of cars and motorcycles, and people selling stuff on the roads. You can spend two hours on the road going to a place you can reach in half an hour in a normal situation. Thanks to the traffic jams, though, Iyana can come up with a lot of stories, mostly shorties, as she prefers to spend the time during her trips writing into her cell phone rather than sleeping.
Another thing Iyana loves is kitties. Right now she has three of them. Their names are Cil, Horus, and Betsy, and one kitten. When she doesn’t write, she plays with them, or they would play with her when she writes.

Welcome to TnT Confidential, Iyana!
Thank you so much for having me, Elyzabeth. I really appreciate it, especially considering that my story is not a usual one.

Muse is quite a dark tale. What inspired you to write it?
It was quite a long time ago that I wrote it but I remember this young actor who is just very beautiful. He inspired me to write Julien story.

What was the hardest part about writing this story?
Oh gosh. Those scenes involving methods of torture and torture devices were torturous for me to write. Yet I wrote them. Go figure.

Did you have to do any research?
Yes. For those torture scenes.

What’s your usual writing process like?

I usually start with an idea for the plot and the ending of the story. I would write the idea down in a form of a synopsis but it’s not going to be a detailed outline. Writing an outline usually tires me out and when I am finished with it, I could lose interest on the story already. I said I usually knew the ending of the story, but I’m always open to wherever my story and characters take it.

What are you currently working on?

I’m planning a Halloween story right now for a challenge. I hope I can finish it in time.

September interrogation…
- A book recommendation for September

- A personal Anecdote
Well, I don’t know if it’s funny or not but I have this colleague, a fellow teacher. His name is Ridwan. One day in the Teacher’s Room, the television was on and there was a video clip of this boy band. Another teacher, a lady, said to him, “Ridwan, I think you’re as handsome as they are.” You know what Ridwan said? He replied, “Well, ma’am, if I were that handsome, I wouldn’t have been here teaching.” Ouch.

Muse by Iyana Jenna

Damien King is a painter who gets inspired from tormenting his models. Julien is his one-time muse. Warning: BDSM, torture, violence, dub-con

Excerpt

Prologue
He could not take his eyes off the artist. His breath held fast for a moment when the painter seemed to glance his way, but apparently not, he didn’t stand a chance of being noticed. Damien King admired beauty and what he meant by beauty was a definite glory. It was obvious from his paintings. Damien needed a delicate-looking model for his muse and Julien would not even dare dream it. He was not in that category. In truth, he was nothing. Nothing.
Looking around in terror, Julien made sure he was still alone, hiding in a corner of the gallery where Damien displayed his artwork. No one he knew was anywhere in the vicinity although his father would eventually realize he was missing and begin to seek him out.
Knowing his hiding spot would not be safe for long, despite the shadow protecting it, Julien crept out toward the tall, floor-to-ceiling, blood-red drapes. Yet as he lifted his face, a pair of crimson-angry eyes fell to his and Julien shrieked, fleeing to a room where Damien had just retreated. His heart pounded hard, anticipating the horror that the future would bestow upon him.
***
Damien crinkled his nose as he rearranged Julien’s stance. The stench of blood and semen—his semen—assaulted his nostrils. The lad was unconscious now as he tightened the leather cords around Julien’s wrists. The ropes hung down from the ceiling, suspending the model in free space. Dark lids covered the boy’s clenched shut eyes, now drenched with sweat running from his brow. Those liquid pearls of sweat doused the boy’s face and body, including his bare chest and red, welt-covered back.
Damien tilted his head sideways, marveling at his own artwork, and that other lovely shape—definitely not his work—a well-rounded rump swathed with angry marks. The artist smirked, full of contentment. A little push to spread the legs apart and he would be ready to capture Julien’s startling expressions on canvas. Damien smiled, thinking of how it had all started.
