“Are you ready for school tomorrow, pet?”

Anais jumped in her seat at the sound of his voice. She hadn’t heard him come in. She lifted her head from her paperwork. As usual, butterflies swarmed in her belly at the sight of him. He stood beneath the doorway, impeccably dressed in his dark suit and stark white shirt. His long hair was pinned back in a man bun, not a wisp out of place. The only thing that denoted he was finally at home and relaxing after a long day was the way he’d loosened the top of his tie and opened the top two buttons of his shirt. The teasing glimpse of male flesh made her body prickle with awareness. She knew what lay beneath the fine material.

Only problem is, she might have bartered for more than she can handle.

I've seen you grow and flourish. You published one of my first books, A Decade of Longing, and you've published my latest story, Dark Heart, in the Bad Alpha anthology.

You started out small, and now, you've got not only Evernight Romance but also Evernight Teen. You've created your own story lines, Romance on the Go, or Planet Alpha. You've created a team, no, a family, of more than 100 authors. You don't only publish books, you care for them. Every day, you show us, the authors, that you're there for us and as you grow, so do we. I'm proud of being part of this family. I'm proud of being an Evernight author. She gasped when he stood in his chair, pinned his arms to either side of her and crowded her against the bar.

"You say you're in favor of those like me, but you're whispering the word as if it were a damn disease. Do you think I don't know what's happening at SOA, sweetheart?" He leaned closer to her. "SOA wants to help by actively looking for a cure to shifting. They pretend to be separate from the government, but in truth there are alliances in place. You both want to get rid of shifters and any other monsters, as you call them. We are a threat to the balance of the world." Daryl laughed humorlessly. "Did your people really think I didn't know?"
