Wednesday Brief! Your Hump Day Dose of Flash Fiction!

Greetings friends and happy Hump Day! This week's prompts were:

"I can see clearly now..."
or
canvas, moustache, pond
or
"I'd follow you anywhere"
or
"Take your clothes off or I'll...."
or
chicken, pantomime, stock market
or
"His/her eyes were as green as..."

Initially this was going to be an individual flash, like all the others, but it somehow got out of hand and I think it's just begging for me to write a Part II. Read it and let me know what you think ;-)  Have a great day! And don't forget to visit the other awesome flashers! (links at the bottom, as usual!)

Wings that won’t fly

Lucas’s body hurled to the ground in what he deemed would be his demise. He closed his eyes, preparing for the inevitable end and the pain to come. There would be a lot of pain. That was what happened when you tumbled from a fifty-story building. You died in painful agony. The wind rushed in his ears as he fell. He tried spreading his wings one last time but failed miserably. Any moment now.

Suddenly, something shifted in the air and he found himself rising instead of falling. Was he dead already? Had he died before reaching the concrete sidewalk? He cracked open his eyes and looked up into the face of his savior. Two thoughts rushed through his brain before he fainted: her eyes were as green as the meadows back home and that he had to get away from anything that reminded him remotely of home.

***

Evangelina barley stopped Lucas from throwing himself back into thin air. She extended her talons and crushed him against her red scales, careful not to hurt him any further but also hard enough so that he would not fidget. As he lost consciousness in her grasp she spread her wings to its full span and vanished into the fading sunlight.

***

Lucas lay on a soft mattress. The smell of clean sheets assaulted his senses and the feel of cotton rubbing gently on his wounds barely bothered him. Something was off. He listened carefully, trying to gauge if there was any immediate danger. The only noise he recognized was the sound of running water coming from a nearby bathroom. Gingerly, he tried stretching. He popped open his eyes in surprise as he realized that he was unbound. He stared around at the dimly lit room. It was a small apartment, compressed of nothing more than a kitchenette, a table for two, the bed he was lying on and a door that likely led to the bathroom. He stared at the colorful quilt that covered him and groaned. Throwing off the blanket, he studied his body. He lay naked except for his grey boxer shorts. He ran a hand down his torso, noticing how all his wounds had been dressed. An unnecessary precaution, he thought amused, as they were already healing. Were his wings healing too? They had never been hurt in battle before. He turned over into his stomach and spread the black appendages. He grinned onto the pillow. They were not healed and they would probably take time to recover, but already he could feel strength seeping back into them.

“I wouldn’t do that if I were you.” The soft feminine voice caused him to turn sharply towards the bathroom door. He grimaced as his still tender ribs stabbed into his side. “Are you all right?”

“What do you want?” he snapped.

The woman draped in nothing more than a baby blue towel that barely reached halfway down her thighs, stopped her approach a few feet from the bed. Her green eyes bore into him and he looked away flustered. His gaze dropped to her mouth and he discovered himself licking his lips, the urge to nibble on her lush lower lip, causing butterflies to dance in his stomach. He took in a steadying breath, noticing at the same time how the tips of her long red hair curled right above her breasts, dripping cool water into the valley in between. Lucas’s cock began to swell as he looked further. He imagined his hands around the woman’s waist, her long toned legs wrapped around him as he took possession of her. All erotic notions vanished from his thoughts as he noticed the red dragon tattoo entwining around the woman’s knee and curling its way onto her ankle.

“Dragon,” he hissed.

***

“Took you a while to recognize me, demon,” Evangelina’s voice came out huskier than she had intended and she felt a blush creep onto her cheeks as Lucas’s grey eyes shot towards her face. “The horde is attracted to the wings. They will know you’re here and we’ll both be killed,” she snapped, trying to disguise her discomfort. Lucas nodded and collected his wings, the appendages vanishing before her eyes as if they had never been there. Evangelina had stood still as he assed her. She was afraid that if she moved he’d sense her arousal. She was afraid that if she moved she’d throw herself at him.

She thanked the stars that he was too injured to move. Unable and unwilling to move, she bit her lower lip as she watched Lucas impatiently swipe back a strand of long black hair that had fallen over his eyes. She followed the movement, wondering how it would feel to have those strong fingers caress and touch her body.

“Is that why you came out of the shower without bothering to dress? You sensed my wings?” She took in a heady breath, Lucas’s melodic baritone voice causing a sudden shiver to run down her spine.

“Yes.” Her answer was barely a whisper and she quickly looked away, too embarrassed to hold his heated stare. That proved to be a mistake. Liquid rushed to her core and her nipples hardened further as she noticed the tent in his boxers. What had she gotten herself into?

Wednesday Brief! Your Hump day dose of flash fiction!

Greetings everyone and happy Wednesday! As usual I'm running around in major chaos with all my classwork, day job and home chores. (That's the reason there was no Monday hottie this week, sorry.) I almost didn't get this week's brief done, but at the last minute, (I've checked the story, but please forgive any errors), I came up with this magical tale which I hope you like.

This week's prompts were:

"Hit me with your best shot"

or

unicorn, mandolin, some sort of plant

or

"hit or miss"

or

"sex on the beach"

or

"I thought I knew (fill in the blank), until he/she...."

or

bartender, math, elephant

Hope you enjoy the flash and don't forget to read those other great stories brought to you by the lovely authors participating in the Wednesday Brief's. (links at the bottom). Have a great day!

Music of the heart

Orla stepped through the ivy curtain running and laughing. Her golden locks waved behind her like a banner, marking her position. Lightning lit the sky and thunder announced its presence with a booming voice. A light wind blew and her light green gown tangled round her legs, yet she did not pause. She heard the human behind her, calling out and begging her to stop but Orla ran on.
The moon glowed in the sky, lighting her path, though she needed no light to know the paths of the forest. Tiring of the chase, Orla climbed a tree. Making herself comfortable atop a branch, she waited for the man to appear. She’d spotted him the night before, a mandolin at his back, whistling a merry tune while walking down the road. Mesmerized by his song she’d come closer. The man was marvelously handsome. Too handsome to be human, she had thought, but he looked like one nonetheless: Tall, broad, with muscled arms that demonstrated that this was no simple musician but a man who’d traveled many paths in life. He had a friendly face that might not have been described handsome by some but that she found fascinating. He was beardless, with a straight nose, thin lips and a strong jaw, but it was his eyes, green as the meadow, that urged her into playfulness.
Oh, Orla hadn’t been a naughty fairy luring innocent men into the forest in a very long time. Abandoned by her fairy brothers and sisters as they found new paths in life, she had taken to caring for the forest on her own. She couldn’t remember the last time she had teased a human, but this man was different. This man made her fairy blood boil in excitement. Deciding that it was time she had a little fun, she called to him in dreams. He followed without question, and thus the merry chase was one.
Suddenly, the man crashed through the trees, interrupting Orla's trail of thought. Orla covered her mouth, fighting the temptation to laugh and provoke him further. Her laughter died in her lips and desire rushed through her veins as she caught sight of his pale skin peaking through the open neck of his chemise.
Orla watched the human as he stopped and looked up at her tree with a cheeky grin. Orla’s breath caught in her throat. Could he see her? She remained still, using her powers to camouflage with the nature around her. The man’s smile grew. He moved towards her and Orla panicked, afraid he'd catch her. However, he did not climb the tree, but simply sat at its root. Passing a hand through his brown curls, he looked up. Orla bit down on her lip to stop herself from gasping. Through the branches, leaves and flowers, the man’s eyes found hers, stirring something deep inside her.
“So you’re still here, fair maiden. No need to answer, I’ve seen you, just like you’ve seen me.”
Orla sat quietly on her branch, afraid to move and afraid to acquiesce that she had indeed locked eyes with him.
“You have only shown yourself to me this once, maiden, but I have glimpsed you before.”
The man began to whistle the tune she had heard when she first saw him. Orla held her breath, the melody seeping into her skin, impregnating her with some sort of knowledge that at the same time remained hidden beyond her grasp. The man began to sing, and Orla nimbly climbed down the tree. As if in a trance, she approached the musician, watching him in pure rapture. He did not move his mouth, but she heard his song loud and clear for it was one that came from the heart.
“Sweet maiden, of golden hair,
Smile like sunshine,
Laughter like bells,
You are the answer to my prayer.
Where it up to me,
I’d bring you the moon.
Where it up to me,
I’d bring you the sun.
Where it up to me,
I’d take you into my arms and whisk you away on a unicorn.
Sweet maiden, of golden hair,
Smile like sunshine,
Laughter like bells,
You are the answer to my prayer.”
Orla bent down and placed her hand over the man's. The music stopped. She shook her head slightly but stopped when he looked up at her, his green eyes piercing right through her magical soul.
“What are you?” she whispered.
“A musician,” he replied.
The man took her hand and though he did not tug, she fell onto his lap, circling his neck with her arms, like he was no stranger. The human wrapped his arms around her and brought her closer, his eyes, never leaving her face.
“Your name?” she whispered urgently.
Erin,” he said, his lips a breadth away from hers.
Erin.” The whisper of his name disappeared into the wind as his lips touched hers. Orla closed her eyes and rested her hands on Erin’s chest. She felt the erratic beat of his heart under her fingertips, the creation of a new song sprouting among them as their tongues mingled and danced in to the rhythm. Wind blew against them, thunder pealed the sky, rain began to fall in furious droplets but all Orla felt was Erin’s warm body pressed against hers. All she heard was his song mingling with her own song of the forest and its creatures. A bird cried out in the distance breaking the spell. Orla pulled away and gazed at the sky. Pink flower petals caressed their skin as they fell from the tree. For the first time, she realized they had been under an almond tree. They had Mother Nature's blessing. She smiled and gazed into Erin’s eyes. Tentatively, she placed a hand on his cheek. He responded by tilting his head towards her hand, searching for it's soft caress.
“Green as the meadow,” she whispered. “You bring a new song to the forest, meadow fairy.”
Erin grinned. “I have long searched for your song, Orla of the forest. You have brought a new song and a new home, to a lost fay."
Orla pressed her lips to Erin's and took in a deep breath. Rain, grass, pine, freedom, love. She was alone no longer. Like her brothers and sisters, she at last found her own song for she now had her own fairy lover.

Wednesday Brief! Your Hump day dose of flash fiction!

Greetings everyone!

I'm back from my Berlin Holidays! (more of that in another post, soon, I promise) and what better way to celebrate than with a new Wednesday Brief story?!

"It was a dark and stormy night"

or

candy, crow, a length of rope

or

"When I saw his/her eyes, I just knew that..."

or

French kiss, French fry, third French object of your choice

or

penguin, ventriloquist, rapier

or

"Are you glad to see me or is that a (fill in the blank) in your pocket?"

I picked all the French ones. I'm not really all that satisfied with the ending but this is what I could come up with at the last minute. Enjoy! (and don't forget that the links to more awesome stories are at the bottom!)

Mermaid in a sea of fire

A drop of sweat rolled down his temple, across his cheek and paused at the edge of his lips before rolling down his chin. Damn, it was hot. Andrew passed his sweaty hands through his dirty blond hair. Ugh. Sweaty strands of hair stuck to his fingers and he desisted in the attempt to groom himself. Wiping his hands on his jeans, he took a swig of his Coke. He should have left the rundown bar as soon as he stepped inside and discovered they had no air conditioning but he’d seen her. Her dark eyes had pierced right through him, causing a nervous jitter to tap dance in his stomach as he made his way into the room. Sitting four benches away from her, he ordered a coke and watched the pretty brunette’s reflection in the bar’s mirror.
She sat on her own, eyes downcast, fixated on her plate of French fries. She ate slowly, taking one golden slice at a time, tasting the mayonnaise covered potatoes with relish. Once or twice, mayo stuck at the edge of her lips and as her tongue slid out to clean swipe it off, his cock happily stirred to life imagining those plump lips around his shaft.
He forced his eyes to the girl’s face. She was not stunningly beautiful but she had an aura of quiet confidence that appealed to him. His glance lowered and he found himself catching a glimpse of her cleavage, encased in a simple v-cut aquamarine t-shirt. Andrew swallowed and tried to drive his eyes away from the girl’s image. His sight rested on her hands. Her fingers were long and slender. Piano player fingers, he thought absentmindedly. While with one hand she daintily picked up the French fries, with the other she drummed her fingers on the grimy counter to the French song blaring from the dusty speakers.
He seemed to be poised in time, disturbed only by the unbearable heat that made his grey t-shirt stick to his skin as he watched, mesmerized, the unsuspecting girl. Andrew shook his head, trying to rid himself of the spell he seemed to be in. He glanced at his torn and wrinkled napkin, the name of the bar, "le chant de la sirène" barely readable. It was time to leave. He’d already stared at the girl long enough and she had not glanced at him again since he sat. For him, that was as good as a ‘get lost’ sign. As he stood from his stool, the girl turned to him, her large brown eyes, stilling him.
“Papa, augmente le volume, si vous plait.”
A chill raced down his spine at the sound of her voice, another followed as she met his stare head on and asked with a smile. “Voulez vous danser?”
Andrew nodded, unable to utter the simple French word for yes. He couldn’t dance to save his life but at that moment he didn’t care. Forgetting the unbearable heat, he became prisoner to the French mermaid’s spell. His surroundings melted and all he could see was the smile of an angel.
“Papa, le musique!” With a comforting smile she took his hand and guided him to the small empty space left between chairs and tables.
“Papa!”
“Oui, oui!” Andrew heard from behind the bar as a man fumbled and suddenly the French song blared louder through the old stereo system. He started as the brunette brazenly wrapped her arms around his neck and pressed her body to his. With a wicked smile she began to move against him like a fish in water. Andrew’s breath stuck in his throat. Unsure of what to do, he stayed still as the girl used him to balance her daring dance moves to the upbeat French song.
“You’re not much of a dancer,” she said in broken English.
Andrew smiled. “No—“
“More of a watcher,” she teased.
Andrew felt the back of his neck burn in embarrassment. So she had noticed that he had been staring.
“That’s okay,” she said, stepping even closer to him. “I like to watch too.”
Andrew nodded, speechless.
“What else do you like to do?” The brunette bit her lower lip, inevitably drawing his eyes to them. Before he knew what he was saying, Andrew was replying, “to kiss.”
The brunette laughed. “Excellent, me too.”
Then she was kissing him. Her lips brushed against his, and as he opened his mouth her tongue delved inside, caressing his in a light feather touch that caused goosebumps to rise on his skin. Wrapping his hands around her waist and pulling her closer, he swiped his tongue against the top of her mouth. She gasped and he took the opportunity to deepen the french kiss.
“Lisette,” she whispered huskily as they caught their breaths, “my name is Lisette.”
“Andrew. I—“
“I’ll be ready at 8. You can pick me up here.”
Andrew nodded and watched as Lisette walked back to the bar and sat on her stool. With an absent minded nod to himself, he walked towards the door. He smiled as he stepped outside. Scorching heat raced to meet him. It was no longer a bother for inside the grimy bar waited the mermaid that would keep him cool.

  • "Spring fever or hay fever, I don't know..."

  • "Love is in the air"

Sweeter than lollipops

With shaking fingers, Katie flattened the wrinkles on her skirt as she walked down the sidewalk towards the candy store. She stopped at the window, pretending to admire the colorful candy display. Yes, he was there all right. He stood behind the counter in his frisk white apron, blue jeans and black tshirt, taking note of the week's inventory, oblivious to her crush on him. Taking a deep breath, she pressed her hand to the glass door and pushed. A bell chimed above her head as she entered. She kept her gaze trained on some candy at the far end of the store as she stepped further inside.

“Good afternoon,” he politely rumbled from behind the counter.

“Hi,” she replied in a squeaky tone. She hurried to the back of the store. The blush creeping down her neck deepened as she felt his eyes boring into her back.

It had been like that from day one. Attracted by the colorful display at the shop window and succumbing to her sweet tooth, she had entered the store. He had stood behind the counter in all his masculine glory, smiling at her as if she was his best customer. That dimpled smile and merry blue eyes left her breathless. When he cheerfully welcomed her to the store, and advised her to try the lollipops, her legs had shaken. When he walked her to the lollipop section, at the back of the store, his body so close to hers she could smell his heady scent, part of her body had woken with a start. Every time she went to the store, it was the same thing: blushing cheeks, shaking legs, and squeaky voice.

Katie gasped as she reached the lollipop counter. It was empty.

“Yes, we have no lollipops this week, the order hasn’t come in.”

Spoken directly from behind her, Katie jumped. Slowly, she turned on her heels. Roy. His nametag read Roy. Once, she had joked that his name matched with toy. He’d laughed even though the joke was pathetic. Sharp blue eyes regarded her with unveiled interest and Katie swallowed, trying vainly to wet her dry mouth.

“That’s a shame,” she managed to mutter.

Her lips unbearably dry, the tip of her tongue darted out to wet them. Her eyes widened as she observed Roy’s glance fall to her mouth and his eyes darken.

“I have something else you might like,” he muttered, his eyes meeting hers.

“What would that be?” she whispered, appalled by the intensity of his gaze though unable to look away.

Tentatively, he reached out and tucked a strand of her short auburn tresses behind her ear. Her eyes widened and her lips parted in surprise. He smiled. The pad of his thumb stroked her jaw and her breath hitched. Cupping her chin, he leaned over and touched his lips with hers. Surprising herself, Katie responded immediately by closing the distance between them. Roy snaked a hand around her waist and pulled her closer while he nibbled slightly at her lower lip. With trembling fingers, Katie wound his arms around his neck, urging him to deepen the kiss. Her mouth opened and he plunged in. She moaned as the gentle kiss gained in passion, their tongues sliding against each other, tasting and taking possession of every inch they could find. Roy’s grip on her waist tightened, pressing her against him. She whimpered into his mouth as the swell of his cock nudged her lower belly, arousing her further. A bell chimed, breaking them apart. Katie dropped her hands to her side and averted her eyes. What had just happened? Roy shuffled his feet, and smoothed the white apron of his work uniform. He cleared his voice.

“Welcome, I’ll be with you in a moment,” he called to the newly arrived customer. Katie intended to turn around and leave, the nerves in her stomach threatening to consume her, but he was quicker. Grabbing her wrist, Roy pulled her closer. He leaned over and kissed her temple.

“Did you like it?”

“Yes.” She couldn’t lie. Not when he was so close that she was tempted to kiss him again, not when she had dreamed of kissing him from the moment she saw him.

“More than the lollipops?” he insisted. She looked up at him and was surprised to see him frowning, his blue eyes lit with worry.

Katie smiled. “Definitely. Will you have more tomorrow?” she dared ask.

“I’ll have more tonight, if you want it,” he said, the wrinkle in his forehead fading as his smile grew.

“I do,” she replied, smiling in turn.

Goodbye my love, goodbye

The song replayed in her head repeatedly, the lyrics haunting her as she pushed her way through the crowd. The words echoed in her head as the singer’s naturally deep voice mournfully sang to the melancholic tune.

“Whoever said that love was easy? Whoever said that life was easy?
It’s all a game, a broken game, where you love me and then leave me.”

Meredith's grey eyes filled with tears. She shook her head and continued to push her way across the throng of passengers. For some strange reason, it seemed to her that everyone was going in the opposite direction. Perhaps, she should desist; let him go without a final goodbye. No. The song went along her tattered emotions, the lyrics seemingly describing her situation.

“Whoever said that love was easy? Whoever said that life was easy?
Goodbye, goodbye, my love. Every hello becomes a goodbye...”

She had to make it past the throng of people into another train before the flight left, and before she lost her chance to say goodbye, forever. Finally, the crowd thinned as the train arrived into the station. She ran, bursting through the doors at the last moment, her heart in her throat. Meredith reclined against the closed doors. She closed her eyes, catching her breath and allowing the cool metal to freshen her skin. She was closer. Inevitably, she thought back to their last conversation.

“Meredith, I’m leaving.”

“What?” she looked up from her books, her eyes wide.

“I’ve had a job offer in New Zealand and I’ve accepted it.”
“And when are you leaving?”

“In a week.”

“And you were thinking of telling me, when?” She screamed at him. The idea of one of them leaving had always been there but she never expected for it to really happen.

“I’m telling you now, aint I?”

“And you expect me to be happy about this?” Yes, when they started dating there had been that possibility. They were young, barely starting out in that difficult path called life, but she had always thought that love would prevail. She always believed that when one of them moved, the other would follow.

“I expect you to accept it and to enjoy our last week together. I expected us to live this week to the limit.”

“Fuck you.”

“Meredith, why are you so angry, you knew—“

She left before he could finish. She left with angry tears in her eyes and without looking back. She left without saying goodbye.

He called her everyday, without fault. She ignored all his calls, erasing the messages before hearing them. She ignored all of it, until, early this morning. He called her one last time to say goodbye. It broke her. She didn’t stop to think. She grabbed her keys, her coat, her cell phone and hurried to the nearest subway station.

The train rolled to a stop and she numbly stumbled out, pulling out her earphones. She ran towards the nearest flight panel, looking at the ugly letters of departures, tears blinding her vision. Panic started to seize her. What if she couldn’t find him? What if she didn’t say goodbye? What if she never told him how much she loved him and how sorry she was? With trembling fingers, she pulled out her phone. He picked up on the second ring.

“Meredith, I—“

“Derek, please, where are you? I’m at the airport I need to see you, I—“

“You’re where? I’m at Gate A. Meredith, I—“

“I’m coming--“

“Meredith—“

She hung up and ran. She reached the gate in record time, her breath stilted, her heart frantic and torn at the prospect of saying goodbye one last time. Yet, now that the moment was upon her, she was strangely calm. Goodbye would hurt but she also knew that had he remained for her, she would never have forgiven herself. Goodbye was the best way, and perhaps some day they would meet again. Perhaps some day, their goodbye would turn into a hello and another cycle would begin… Large hands grabbed her shoulders and spun her around. Warm, well-known lips found hers. Passion, longing, apologies and forgiveness, everything was spun into that embrace. His hands lowered to her waist, pressing her sharply into his arms, allowing her to experience for one last time the warmth of his body against hers. His tongue probed deeper, licking every crevice of her mouth. Her tongue responded, fiercely dancing along his, relishing its last taste. They stopped for air and Meredith took in his haggard appearance. Dark circles lined his eyes, and his usual smiling mouth was grim.

“Derek.” She whispered his name, cupping his cheek to feel the smoothly shaved surface. A glimmer of tears appeared in his eyes and he closed them, hiding them from her view.

“Meredith—“

“I’m sorry, Derek. I shouldn’t have left like that. I’ve been a fool. We both knew this moment would come and—“

“Meredith, please, let me speak.” Derek looked into her eyes imploringly, shutting her up instantly.

“You haven’t heard any of my messages, have you?” He asked with a sad smile.

Meredith shook her head. She glanced at the floor, shame burning her cheeks. Derek reached out and lifted her head.

“I should have gone to see you. I’m sorry. I love you, honey. It’s as simple as that. I know life and love aren’t easy, but I want to try and make it compatible. It’ll take some getting used to but maybe we could try long distance while I search for a new job, here, at home, with you. Meredith, I don’t want to leave you.”

His voice broke and a fresh bout of tears rolled freely down Meredith’s cheeks. She flung herself into Derek’s arms. Her bones cracked slightly as he embraced her hard, afraid to let release her.

“Of course, I’ll accept long distance and I’ll look for jobs in New Zealand… I—I want to be with you, Derek, I love you. I’ve been an idiot, I—“

“Then, we’ll find a way, Meredith. We’ll find a way.”

Meredith nodded. She smiled as Derek kissed her. Hope, love, a possible future. The taste of one hello turning into a goodbye and one goodbye turning into a hello.

Happy Thursday!

I discovered this song by accident the other night :) It was great inspiration for my WIP. Enjoy!
